All Revved Up

Set to the stunning backdrop of both the Texas countryside and the city of Austin, 24 Formula One cars will line the grid in late October, engines screaming in anticipation, to capture the Champion’s crown.

Just imagine a 133 foot climb into the first turn pulling almost four g’s, before heading into turn two and a number of high speed corners. At racing speeds of up to 220 mph, this is Grand Prix racing at its thrilling best.

Current world champion Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes AMG Petronas team says: “It’s very tough to get all the sectors together. I find the second and last sector the easiest. The first sector is the hardest with the high speed; there are several different lines you can take and it is massively quick.”

Red Bull’s Mark Webber added: “It’s quite blind on the apex so it’s difficult for us to see the exact apex point and it just seems to be very, very slippery from apex to exit. A lot of us look pretty amateurish but we just refuse to believe there is that little grip.”
Jenson Button from McLaren revealed: “The change of direction is faster than Silverstone and that’s saying something. It’s fantastic.”
The track is the only FIA-certified Grade One track in the U.S. and there are only twenty-six Grade One certified motor-sports facilities in the world. The circuit complex features a 9,000 spectator capacity grandstand, but the area itself can comfortably hold more than 250,000 spectators. This entire complex spreads over 1,000 acres and cost approximately $400 million to build. Its construction created 1,700 jobs. Some 300 people are permanently employed by the track and several thousand more posts are available seasonally.

Contained within the circuit is the 251 foot signature observation tower, with the Austin 360 Amphitheatre at the bottom. A great treasure in the live music capital of the world the facilities have hosted Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, Kiss and Kanye West.

And if you think that’s high octane, then how about a special performance by 10-time Grammy winner and international superstar Taylor Swift? The world’s premier motor-sport series meets one of the biggest stars in music, and it only happens this fall at The Circuit Of The Americas (COTA).

Taylor Swift was raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, moving to Nashville, Tennessee, as a 14-year-old to pursue a career in country music. She became the youngest songwriter ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift’s eponymous début album in 2006 marked the start of her career as a country music singer. Her third single, “Our Song”, made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart. Her epic 1989 World Tour, saw her travel the globe for seven months with barely any time for rest.

Taylor told us: “Music has taken me all over the world, but the fans are the reason it’s been so magical. I’m so blown away by how nice they are to me. It’s strange to feel so understood by such a large group of people, but I love it.
“I think song-writing is the ultimate form of being able to make anything that happens in your life productive. If you get out of a bad relationship that was a complete waste of time, you can write about it and it can become a benefit to your career. How sweet is that?”
The concert takes place at the Super Stage in the infield of the Circuit, not at Austin 360 Amphitheatre. “The top performer in the world right now is Taylor Swift and she will perform on the Saturday before the race the following day,” said COTA chairman Bobby Epstein. “We think we can bring in 100,000 new people and put on the biggest show.”

COTA contributes almost $1billion in economic impact to central Texas through increased tourism and annual operations. The Circuit also continues to be a leader in environmental awareness and sustainability. It’s helped make advances in educational and scientific fields, including solar car technology, as well as racing and consumer automotive technology. The whole event takes place between 21 and 23 October.
